Common Questions!

How long does the experience last?

Our alpaca experiences usually last between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the group size, pace of the walk, and how long guests spend meeting and feeding the alpacas afterwards.

We keep the experience relaxed and friendly, allowing plenty of time to enjoy the alpacas, take photos, and ask questions along the way.

What happens if the weather is bad?

As we are an outdoor experience, very severe weather may occasionally mean we have to cancel or rearrange a walk for the safety and comfort of both our visitors and alpacas.

If we do need to cancel your experience for any reason, we will contact you between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on the morning of your booked walk. Thankfully, cancellations are very rare — since 2021, we have only had to cancel walks 3 times due to weather or other circumstances.

What should i wear?

For your alpaca experience, we recommend dressing for the outdoors as the fields are very open and can sometimes be quite windy. Comfortable clothing and sensible footwear such as trainers, walking boots or wellies are ideal, especially if the ground is uneven or muddy in wetter weather.

No open-toed or heeled shoes, please.

Layers are always a good idea, so you can adjust to the temperature, and we’d suggest bringing a waterproof coat during cooler months or if rain is forecast. In summer, sunscreen and sunglasses can also be helpful as there is limited shade in the fields.

Most importantly, wear something comfortable so you can relax and enjoy spending time with the alpacas!

Can we bring a dog?

Unfortunately, we are unable to allow dogs on our alpaca experiences, as they can cause stress to the alpacas and other animals on the farm. We also kindly ask that dogs are not left in vehicles during your visit.

Is it wheelchair friendly?

Unfortunately, our alpaca walking experiences are not currently wheelchair friendly. The walks take place across uneven fields and open ground which can be difficult to navigate with a wheelchair, especially in wet weather. We also do not have wheelchair-accessible toilet facilities on site.

In addition, our alpacas are not specifically trained to work around wheelchairs during walks, so we would not want to compromise the safety or comfort of either our visitors or animals.

However, we do have two gentle alpacas who are suitable for quieter meet-and-greet style visits for guests who use wheelchairs. These sessions allow visitors to meet the alpacas up close in a calmer setting without needing to take part in the full walk experience.

Please message us if this is something you would be interested in.

Is there a minimum age requirement?

The minimum age to walk an alpaca is 8 years old.

Children aged 8–12 must share an alpaca with a participating adult, while children aged 12 and over are able to walk their own alpaca independently.

Children under 8 are very welcome to attend as spectators, as long as there is another adult present to supervise and help with them during the experience. Calm younger children who are able to focus and walk sensibly for around 30 minutes may also have the opportunity to help hold the lead rope alongside an adult.

What is the cost?

Our alpaca walking experiences are £25 per person, with spectator places available for £8 per person.

Children under 12 who are sharing an alpaca with a participating adult are classed as 1 experience place and 1 spectator place.

Spectator spaces are only available alongside a booked experience place, and we allow a maximum of 2 spectators per 1 alpaca experience booking.

Can Pregnant Guests Walk an Alpaca?

Yes, pregnant guests are welcome to take part in our alpaca experiences up to 7 months of pregnancy, provided they feel comfortable doing so. After 7 months pregnant, we kindly ask guests not to walk an alpaca due to the uneven ground and outdoor nature of the experience.

Our walks take place across open fields which can sometimes be muddy or slippery depending on the weather, and although our alpacas are calm and gentle animals, unexpected movements can occasionally happen.

Spectator places are available for anyone who would still like to enjoy the experience without walking an alpaca themselves.

Is Parking Available?

Yes, parking is available on site for visitors attending our alpaca experiences. Please note that all vehicles are parked at the owner’s risk, and Tawnymeade Alpacas cannot accept liability for any loss or damage while vehicles are on the property.

How Many People Are in Each Group?

We keep our groups small, with a maximum of 5 alpacas per walk. This helps create a relaxed, personal experience where everyone has plenty of time to interact with the alpacas, ask questions, and learn more about them.

Keeping groups smaller also allows us to provide a more educational and hands-on experience for all visitors.

Do You Offer Care Home or Private Visits?

Yes, Tawnymeade Alpacas offers a range of private visits and events with our alpacas. We regularly attend care homes, schools, parties, weddings, and fêtes, bringing our friendly alpacas out to meet people in a calm and enjoyable setting.

These visits are a wonderful way to experience the alpacas up close and can be tailored to suit different groups and occasions.

Are Refreshments Available?

We have a small gift shop on site where visitors can browse alpaca-themed gifts and souvenirs. We do not currently offer food or refreshments.

However, on hot days we do provide water for guests during the alpaca experiences to help everyone stay comfortable while out walking.

Are Toilets Available On Site?

Yes, toilet facilities are available on site for visitors. Please note that there is a step to access the toilet, so unfortunately it may not be suitable for guests with mobility difficulties or wheelchair users.

Alpaca Experience Itinerary

Your visit to Tawnymeade Alpacas begins by meeting in the car park, where guests will have the opportunity to use the toilet facilities before the experience starts.

We then begin with a short health and safety talk, along with an introduction to the alpacas and how to handle them during the walk. After this, guests are paired with their alpacas ready for the experience.

You will then enjoy a relaxed 30-minute walk around Tawnymeade with the alpacas, taking in the countryside and getting to know their individual personalities along the way.

After the walk, the alpacas are returned to their area where guests can feed the walking boys carrots and meet any alpacas who did not join the walk. We then head over to the girls’ herd, where visitors can meet and feed the female alpacas carrots, as well as meet any babies in the field.

No visit would be complete without spending time with Skye the llama, who loves cuddles and meeting visitors.

Throughout the experience, the owner takes plenty of photos which are later sent to guests via WhatsApp, allowing everyone to enjoy the experience without worrying about taking pictures themselves.

At the end of the visit, guests are welcome to browse the gift shop, wash their hands, and head home with lots of special memories.

— Why this exists

The animal decides. That's the whole point.

This wasn't built as a visitor attraction. It grew from years of keeping alpacas and noticing what happened to people who walked alongside them — how they slowed down, paid attention, relaxed.

The herd here is known individually — their preferences, their moods, which ones walk well on a wet morning. That knowledge is what makes a real encounter possible.

The land, the herd, the walks — that's it.

There is no other operation here. The farm in rural lincolnshire is where the herd lives year-round, and the walks happen on that same ground.
